THE CHARITIES SHARE £133,000

On Saturday night, in a packed Charm Inn in Carrickmore, we saw the finale of a venture that captured the imagination of people the length and breadth of the country.  Last July eighteen of Carrickmore’s finest made the amazing journey on foot from Cork City to Carrickmore - all in the name of three cancer charities.

They battled the full spectrum of the Irish summer from incessant rain to blistering heat and in ten memorable days, step by painful step, completed the 270 mile trip – ten marathons in ten days. Those who thronged Carrickmore on the evening of Sunday 19th July will long remember the emotional homecoming of the C2C4C walkers.

The success of the venture became fully apparent last Saturday when three charities Marie Curie Cancer Care, Macmillan Cancer Support and the locally based Termonmaguirc Cancer Patients Comfort Fund shared equally in the fund – an astounding £ 133, 032.04. Later in the year the charities can expect a bonus when Gift Aid is received; that is expected to exceed £13,000 and will bring the total cash payout to the charities to over £146,000.  It is further estimated that goods and services in the order of £15,000 were donated to cover the expenses of the C2C4C cause; thus ensuring that all monies collected would go to the three charities.

The picture above shows the presentation by two of the walkers Kelley and Dominic  to Paul Sweeney from Macmillan Cancer Care, Ruth Keyes and Sheena Havlin from Marie Curie and Vincent Meenagh representing Termonmaguirc Cancer Patients Comfort Fund.

The coffers received a significant boost during the week when we were the beneficiaries of a magnificent donation from the The Association of Irish Glasgow Celtic Supporters Clubs.

In the picture the Association's Treasurer, Jim Kelly, former Celtic and Wales striker John Hartson and Assistant Treasurer Brian Walsh present walker Danny Kerr with a cheque for €2500.
